The book examines women who led armies, empires, and rebellions throughout history, including Cleopatra, Tamara of Georgia, Isabella of Spain, Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, Jinga Mbandi of Angola, the Rani of Jhansi, and the 20th-century figures Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, and Indira Gandhi. Fraser uses Boadicea as a central figure to explore how these women were perceived in their time—as monster, angel, honorary male, or shamer of men—and how they have been remembered in later historical narratives.
