About “Tjerita Si Tjonat”

Tjěrita Si Tjonat, Sato Kěpala Pěnjamoen di Djaman Dahoeloe Kala is a 1900 novel written by the journalist F. D. J. Pangemanann. It tells the story of Tjonat, following his journey from committing his first murder at age thirteen to his execution twenty-five years later. The novel is part of a series of bandit stories set in the contemporary Indies. According to Malaysian scholar Abdul Wahab Ali, the style reflects a transition between oral and written literature. The story has been adapted for the stage multiple times, and a film version was produced in 1929. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
