About “Train to Pakistan”
Set in the summer of 1947 during the creation of Pakistan, when ten million Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs were in flight, this 1956 novel by Khushwant Singh centers on the village of Mano Majra, where Sikhs and Muslims had coexisted peacefully for centuries until a ghost train of refugee corpses arrives, plunging the village into religious hatred. It also tells of a Sikh boy and Muslim girl whose love endures the civil war.
