About “Two Hours to Doom”
Red Alert is a novel written by Peter George, originally published in the UK as Two Hours to Doom. It explores the threat of nuclear war and the dangerous simplicity with which it can begin. The book was among the earliest examples of a genre of topical fiction that emerged in the late 1950s. A later novel, Fail-Safe by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler, had a similar premise, leading to a copyright lawsuit by George. The case was settled out of court. Both novels inspired films released in 1964 by Columbia Pictures.
