Under the mountain wall is an account of the Kurelu, a Stone Age tribe in the Baliem Valley of central New Guinea, based on Peter Matthiessen's 1961 visit with the Harvard-Peabody expedition. The book focuses on the lives of the great warrior Weaklekek, the swineherd Tukum, U-mue and his family, and the boy Weake, who was killed in a surprise raid.
