About “Under the Yoke”
Under the Yoke is a historical novel by Bulgarian author Ivan Vazov, written between 1887 and 1888. It was published in parts from 1889 to 1890 in the magazine The Collection of Folk Tales and as a single book in 1894. The story is set in a small town in Central Bulgaria during the months before the April Uprising of 1876. It is considered the most famous work of classic Bulgarian literature. The novel has been translated into more than 30 languages. The first English translation was completed in 1894 by William Morfill and published by the London publishing house William Heinemann.
