About “What Is the Third Estate?”
Qu'est-ce que le Tiers-État? is a political pamphlet published in January 1789 by Abbé Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès. It was written during the Assembly of Notables in 1788 and sent to the printer by late December 1788. The pamphlet was initially published anonymously as a 127-page text. It went through four editions, with Sieyès revealing his authorship after the third edition in May 1789. The work was influential and published shortly before the French Revolution.
