Isis Whit is a young member of the Luskentyrian Sect, a religious group based near Stirling, who is chosen to travel into the outside world to bring back her cousin Morag, the sect's Guest of Honour, after Morag renounces her faith. Her journey through Britain in the Nineties becomes increasingly perilous as she confronts the culture of the Unsaved, including figures associated with neo-fascism and the use of compact discs and herbal cigarettes, while her own belief in the sect's teachings begins to falter.
