Martino was a significant scientist involved in a project known as the K-88. The K-88 exploded, injuring him and causing him to be taken across the Soviet border. He remained there for several months before being returned. Upon his return, the Soviets had replaced his arm with a metal one and given him a featureless metal skull. This transformation made it difficult for Allied Security to confirm that he was truly Martino.
