About “Young men & fire”
Young Men and Fire is a nonfiction account of the Mann Gulch fire of August 5, 1949, in the Montana wilderness, in which a crew of fifteen Smokejumpers, elite airborne firefighters for the US Forest Service, were caught in a sudden and deadly firestorm. The book recounts the events of the fire, the deaths of most of the crew, and the author's long-standing effort to reconstruct the tragedy from scattered evidence and personal reflection.
