About “Rumah Kaca”
House of Glass is the final novel in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's quartet, set in the Dutch East Indies at the turn of the century. It follows the story of Minke, a writer and leader of the dissident movement, who is imprisoned. The narrative shifts to Pangemanann, a former policeman assigned to spy on those continuing the fight for independence. Pangemanann struggles with his conscience as he grows to admire those he is meant to watch. He faces a moral dilemma: whether the law serves to protect the people or to control them. He fears losing his position, family, and self-respect. Ultimately, he recognizes that his real enemies are not Minke and his followers, but the growing energy of a society awakening to change.
