About “The Last Chronicle of Barset”

The Last Chronicle of Barset is a novel by English author Anthony Trollope, published in 1867. It is the sixth and final book in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series, following The Small House at Allington. Set in the fictional county of Barsetshire, the story features characters from previous novels and focuses on the cathedral community. The main plot revolves around the loss of a cheque belonging to the Reverend Josiah Crawley and the reactions of those around him. Trollope based the Rev. and Mrs. Crawley on his own parents. In his autobiography, Trollope called this his best work, but later critics have not universally agreed. The novel was illustrated by G H Thomas, chosen by the publisher, despite Trollope's preference for John Everett Millais, who had illustrated The Small House at Allington.
