A 2005 novel by John C. Wright follows five orphans raised in a strict British boarding school. They do not age while the world around them does. As they grow older, they begin to uncover unsettling truths about their nature. Amelia is a fourth-dimensional being, Victor is a synthetic man who can control the molecular arrangement of matter, Vanity can find secret passageways through solid walls, and Colin is a psychic. Each of their abilities stems from a different understanding of the universe, and their coexistence defies natural laws. The story explores the mystery of why these powers, which should not be able to exist together, are all real.
