About “Kulturkontakt, Kulturkonflikt”

The 1987 congress "Kulturkontakt – Kulturkonflikt" held in Frankfurt highlighted the need for an interdisciplinary discussion on the experience of the foreign. The congress documentation includes about 80 texts, such as keynote speeches, group reports, and statements, which show how cultural and social sciences analyze and interpret the dynamics of cultural processes at the intersection of cultures. The moment of contact between representatives of different cultures is also the moment of cultural conflict and the researcher's opportunity to ask how contact culture is shaped, what happens in conflict, and what consequences arise. The documentation is divided into two parts: Volume 1 covers the self- and foreign image of the cultural researcher, historical migration movements, labor migration, and cultural relations in tourism and cultural exchange. Volume 2 deals with foreign cultures as models for alternative cultures and social movements, media and cultural contact, and "own foreigners." Volume 1 begins with speech texts by Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Ina-Maria Greverus, Péter Niedermüller, Herbert Schwedt, and Jeremy Boissevain. The book was published in 1988.
