In late 1923, newly married Daisy Dalrymple and her husband, Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher, come to America for a honeymoon that mixes business and pleasure. While staying at New York's Chelsea Hotel for meetings with her magazine editor, Daisy hears a gunshot and sees a man plummet down an elevator shaft, a fellow hotel resident and journalist with many enemies, and her search for the killer takes her across society and the country.
