About “Das Treffen in Telgte”
This 1979 novel by Gunter Grass imagines a 1647 gathering of poets from all parts of Germany at the pilgrimage town of Telgte, near the end of the Thirty Years' War, to strengthen the bond of language and literature within a divided nation. They meet and part in disarray amid brutality and anguish; the fictitious meeting replays a real 1947 gathering of German writers known as Group 47.
