About “These are my words”
Twelve-year-old Violet Pesheens is taken to a Residential School in 1966. The story is told through her diary, documenting her journey to the school, her first day, and the early months there. It describes her daily life, including interactions with other students, challenges with Cree girls, and being quarantined during Christmas. She returns home for Easter and reunites with her family. When it's time to go back to the school, her mother offers her a choice: return to the school or go with them to the trapline. Violet must decide her future. The book is a children's fiction story written in diary form.
