About “Death Takes a Flat”

When Major Pontefract retired from the Indian Army, he envisioned a peaceful life in the English countryside, hoping for a small plot of land and a flock of Buff Orpington chickens. His wife, however, preferred a flat in town, arguing that it would keep him close to his club. He agreed, and the couple moved to Kensington. A real estate agent showed them a desirable flat, but upon arrival, they discovered it was already occupied—by a dead man who had claimed the flat before them.
