The Ankh-Morpork Post Office operates efficiently under Postmaster General Moist von Lipwig, a former swindler who has improved its performance. Lord Vetinari invites Moist to discuss making real money, not wages, and refers to the Royal Mint, which has long been run by the Men of the Sheds. The Mint is inefficient, as it costs more to produce a penny than the value of the coin itself. Meanwhile, the Royal Bank is managed by Topsy Lavish, who keeps crossbows at her desk and has a vampire as chief clerk. Before Moist can decide, he is thrust into a series of challenges, including rescuing a prisoner, breaking into his bank vault, and finding missing gold, all while avoiding enemies and ensuring his survival in the banking world.
