This is the twenty-fifth book in a long-running mystery series featuring Dr. Launcelot Priestley. Each year, a group of people from the East End of London travel to the village of Culverden to pick hops. They live in huts and avoid the village, but they contribute to the local economy. Sergeant Wragge finds a twelve-inch butcher knife with strange stains on a road and becomes suspicious. His concerns are confirmed when a robbery and a disappearance occur. He calls in Scotland Yard, and Inspector Hanslet and Jimmy Waghorn investigate. Dr. Priestley's subtle suggestion leads to the solution of the mystery.
