In this 1997 novel, Mendoza, a Company-trained botanist and immortal cyborg operative, is unhappily sent to Renaissance England, a cold, backward country she finds unsafe and unsanitary, under the reign of Mary. Her assignment is to save a species of holly, Ilex tormentosum, that will go extinct in a hundred years, for Dr. Z and the twenty-fourth century, while she falls for Master Nicholas Harpole, a mortal with pale blue eyes and a rich tenor voice.
