The Machine's Child is a 2006 novel by Kage Baker, a direct sequel to The Life of the World to Come. Alec Checkerfield's alter ego, Captain Morgan, has rescued Mendoza the botanist, whose destroyed body and erased memory required her to be regrown and raised to consciousness, while the personalities of her dead lovers Nicholas and Edward now inhabit the same body as Alec.
