In Anne McCaffrey's Dragons Eye, the dragonriders of Pern prepare for a threat they have not faced in two centuries. Thread, a deadly substance that once rained from the sky, has not returned in living memory, but the dragonriders continue to train in Threadfighting techniques passed down through generations. Strange signs—violent storms and volcanic eruptions—suggest that the Red Star is approaching, bringing Thread once more. However, Lord Holder Chalkin of Bitra refuses to believe the warnings, putting Pern at risk. As the dragonriders and other leaders work to convince Chalkin of the danger, they must also prepare for a possible return of Thread, hoping to prevent history from repeating itself.
