Menolly is a young fisher's daughter who longs to learn the Harper's craft. Her talent for music is not valued in her fishing hold, where women have fewer opportunities than men. When her father refuses her request, she runs away from Half Circle Hold during a Threadfall, a deadly rain that falls from the sky.
