About “The cats of Ulthar”
The Cats of Ulthar is a short story written by H. P. Lovecraft in June 1920. The story is told through an unnamed narrator who recounts how a law banning the killing of cats was established in the town of Ulthar. The town is home to an old couple who capture and kill cats belonging to the townspeople. A caravan of wanderers passes through, and the kitten of an orphan named Menes is stolen. After learning of the couple’s actions, Menes prays before leaving town. The local cats then swarm the couple’s house and devour them. The event leads the local politicians to pass a law that forbids the killing of cats. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
