Ellery Queen moves to the small New England town of Wrightsville to find peace and focus while writing a book. He rents a furnished house, which draws him into the story of Jim Haight and Nora Wright. Jim had built the house as a wedding gift for Nora, but he disappeared the day before the wedding, leading to its reputation as "Calamity House." Three years later, Jim returns, and the wedding is set to resume. Ellery discovers evidence that Jim plans to poison Nora, and she later shows signs of arsenic poisoning. However, it is Jim's sister, Rosemary, who dies after drinking a poisoned cocktail. Jim is tried for the murder, and through a series of tragic events, Ellery uncovers the true identity of the murderer.
