About “Halfway House”
Joe Wilson was a poor, itinerant salesman living in Philadelphia with his young wife. Joseph Kent Gimball was a wealthy, socially prominent New Yorker with an elegant wife. These two men were actually the same person, a bigamist leading a double life. His secret was uncovered after he was murdered in a riverfront shack outside Trenton, New Jersey, where he hid to switch identities. Ellery Queen, called in to help old friends, investigates and focuses on the key question: "Who was murdered — Joe or Joseph?" Using small clues, like burnt matches, Queen deduces the killer's identity and narrows it down to one person.
