About “The Robber Bride”

Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride is a 1993 novel inspired by the Brothers Grimm tale "The Robber Bridegroom," in which a cruel groom lures and devours three maidens. Atwood reimagines this story with Zenia, a manipulative and destructive woman who infiltrates the lives of three friends: Tony, Charis, and Roz. Each of them has suffered loss—men, money, time, and emotional stability—due to Zenia's deceitful presence. Zenia's influence varies for each character; to Tony, she is a hidden enemy, to Roz a treacherous woman, and to Charis a soulless figure. Through themes of love, deception, and betrayal, the novel explores how Zenia's malevolence affects her victims' pasts and relationships.
