Stephen Baxter's 2008 novel follows four hostages rescued from religious extremists in Barcelona after five years of captivity. They had promised to watch over one another, but the world they return to is unrecognizable. Rising water, originating from the earth’s mantle, has transformed the planet. Countries vanish as the water level increases, and high ground becomes essential for survival. The story reveals that within fifty years, there will be no place left to escape the rising waters.
