A 1996 novel by Jack Vance. Orphan Jaro Fath has been troubled all his life by visions and voices he cannot understand, and was adopted under mysterious circumstances by the Faths, a scholarly couple on the planet Thanet who never revealed his origins. After the Faths are killed on Ushant, Jaro, their sole heir but without the identity he wants, is threatened by those who wish to exploit or kill him, and sets out with few allies to discover who he really is.
