A 1994 novel by Gregory Benford follows the last humans from the planet Snowglade as they flee from mechs. They travel in an ancient starship toward the Eater, a black hole at the galactic center, hoping it holds their only chance for survival. The refugees grow doubtful of their leader, Captain Killeen, as tensions rise. Meanwhile, Killeen's son, Toby, faces a personal struggle with microchips implanted in his spine, which are affecting his mental state. As the refugees face both their enemies and the dangers of the black hole, Captain Killeen and Toby lead humanity toward its final fate.
