The Gormenghast trilogy by Mervyn Peake consists of three novels published between 1946 and 1959: Titus Groan (1946), Gormenghast (1950), and Titus Alone (1959). A fourth work, Boy in Darkness, was published in 1956 as a novella. Peake was working on a fourth novel, Titus Awakes, at the time of his death in 1968; the manuscript was completed by his widow, Maeve Gilmore, in the 1970s and published in 2011 after being rediscovered by the family. The series is set in the vast, decaying Gothic castle of Gormenghast and explores the lives of its inhabitants within a rigid social structure. The narrative focuses on ritual, tradition, and personal transformation, characterized by elaborate prose and a richly detailed setting.
