Jamie Waterman discovered a cliff dwelling on Mars and learned that an intelligent race once lived on the planet 65 million years ago, before being wiped out by a massive meteor. Now, the Mars exploration program faces cancellation as the New Morality movement, an ultraconservative group, takes control of the U.S. government and cuts funding. Meanwhile, Carter Carleton, an anthropologist fired from his job over unproven rape allegations, begins excavating the remains of a Martian village. As science and politics collide on both Earth and Mars, Jamie works to save the Mars program and uncover the truth about the lost Martians.
