This 2004 book by Charlie Huston follows Hank Thompson, a former California baseball player now bartending on Manhattan's Lower East Side. After his neighbor Russ leaves town and hands Hank a cat named Bud, two Russians beat Hank in his bar, and he realizes someone wants something from him he cannot identify, leading to chases, violence, and a confrontation with the NYPD and mafia figures.
