The book examines the evolution of the military forces under the Komnenian dynasty in the Byzantine Empire during the 11th to 12th centuries. It analyzes the transformation of the army in response to internal and external challenges, focusing on organizational structure, recruitment, and the role of the imperial court. The work is based on the author's doctoral dissertation from The Catholic University of America, completed in 1998.
