Mo, also known as The Bluejay, attempts to aid Dustfinger in the realm of the dead, where he is confronted by Death. Death demands that Mo surrender the life he took when binding the White Book—the Adderhead’s—threatening to take Mo’s and Meggie’s lives if he refuses. She permits Mo and Dustfinger to proceed in their quest to kill the Adderhead. Resa is pregnant, and Meggie struggles with her feelings toward Farid and Doria, the brother of the Strong Man.
