About “The Abbess of Castro”
The source text, in French, notes that melodrama has so often shown sixteenth-century Italian brigands, and that many people have spoken of them without knowing them, that the most false ideas about them now prevail. It states that these brigands were generally the opposition to the atrocious governments that succeeded the medieval republics in Italy, and that the new tyrant was usually the wealthiest citizen of the fallen republic, who adorned the city with magnificent churches and fine paintings to win over the common people.
