Nine feet underwater on a Tuesday in April, police diver Flea Marley finds a human hand with no body attached; a day later, the matching hand is found. Both were recently amputated, apparently while the victim was still alive. DI Jack Caffery, newly assigned to Bristol's Major Crime Investigation Unit, and Flea trace the hands to a missing boy, leading them into Bristol's underworld of drug addiction, street-kids, and an ancient evil.
