Set in London during May 1937, the novel follows acclaimed writer Josephine Tey as she returns to the city to oversee a BBC radio adaptation of her play, Queen of Scots, during the coronation celebrations of King George VI. When a prominent BBC broadcaster is murdered during the coronation ceremony and a second, related death occurs, Detective Chief Inspector Archie Penrose faces challenges in solving the case, prompting Josephine to investigate a web of past betrayals and hidden secrets.
