Written in 1832 as the essential middle section of Stendhal's intended autobiography, this book concerns exclusively the decade following his return from Milan to Paris in 1821. It remained unpublished until fifty years after Stendhal's death. Stendhal appears as a cynical wit, adventurer, lover, brilliant conversationalist, and secret man of letters, recounting his encounters in the salons and boudoirs of the capital along with his hopes, private foibles, and social miscalculations.
