About “The Deerslayer: or, The First War‐Path.”
The Deerslayer, published in 1841, is the fifth and final novel in James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales series. It is set between 1740 and 1745 and serves as a prequel to the other four novels. The story takes place on Otsego Lake in central New York, the same location as The Pioneers, the first novel in the series. The novel explores the early advance of civilization in New York State, a theme that appears in four of Cooper's five Leatherstocking Tales. The protagonist, Natty Bumppo, is the hero of the series, and this novel marks the beginning of his life story. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
