About “Le Cousin Pons”
Le Cousin Pons is part of Honoré de Balzac’s Comédie humaine, one of the last 94 novels and short stories he wrote. It was initially started in 1846 as a novella and was meant to be one part of a two-part work called Les Parents pauvres, with La Cousine Bette as the other part. The story was first published as a serial in the newspaper Le Constitutionnel. By 1847, it had expanded into a full-length novel, focusing on a poor male relative named Pons.
