About “Assommoir”
This novel is a study of alcoholism and poverty in working-class Paris. Gervaise Macquart runs away to Paris with her lover Lantier to work as a washerwoman, and after he leaves her, she marries Coupeau, a teetotal roofer. She opens her own laundry, but after Coupeau is injured and turns to alcohol, their lives spiral into debt and tragedy.
