Alien: Out of the Shadows is a 2014 novel written by Tim Lebbon and published by Titan Books. It takes place between the events of Alien and Aliens. The story follows Ellen Ripley as she becomes involved in a Xenomorph outbreak on the planet LV-178. A mining vessel orbits the planet, and its crew struggles to survive the creatures. Their efforts to escape are made harder by the presence of Ash, whose artificial intelligence has survived inside the shuttle Narcissus, which brought Ripley to the planet.
