Acting Detective Inspector Logan McRae is sent to rural Aberdeenshire after catching a twisted killer, instead of receiving a reward. He is assigned to divisional policing, dealing with minor crimes like drug dealing and shoplifting. When a little girl's body is found near Banff, a major investigation begins. The Major Investigation Team arrives from Aberdeen, eager for answers and willing to step on others to get them. Logan is asked to return to DCI Steel's team, despite his current responsibilities. As his old colleagues search the countryside, causing conflict, Logan becomes more involved in the case. He discovers that dangerous people are hiding in the area, and not everyone will survive.
