Winds of Fate is the first book in the Mage Winds Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey. High Magic was lost to the kingdom of Valdemar centuries ago when the last Herald-Mage sacrificed his life to protect the realm from dark sorcery. Now, the kingdom faces a new threat. Elspeth, a Herald and heir to the throne, must leave her home to find a mentor who can help her develop her untrained magical abilities. Others are also drawn into the conflict against sorcerous evil. Darkwind, a Tayledras scout, discovers a growing menace coming from the "Uncleansed Lands."
