About “Maigret and the Loner”

It was August, and many of the inspectors, along with much of Paris, were on holiday. Things were quiet until Chief Superintendent Maigret received a call about the murder of an unidentified vagrant near Les Halles. The man was found lying on a bed, fully dressed, in an upper room of a long-condemned building. His clothes suggested he was a tramp, but he had neatly trimmed hair, a mustache with a goatee, and carefully manicured hands. Those who saw his picture did not recognize him and did not know his Christian name. The mystery remained: why was he killed, and who was he?
