Marcus Didius Falco, an agent for Emperor Vespasian, travels to Alexandria with his wife, Helena Justina, who wants to visit the Lighthouse and the Pyramids. Falco's mission involves the Great Library, but a mysterious death there leads him into a complex mystery. The death is linked to the darker side of academic life, and an illegal autopsy provides no clear answers. Falco relies on his intuition and the support of Helena and her brother Aulus, who works undercover as a student. As the situation escalates, another death occurs at the royal zoo.
