The novel follows humanity's expansion into the galaxy, where they join a community of alien species. However, beyond the known regions lie the Reapers, a race of sentient starships that seek to destroy organic life. The Illusive Man, leader of the secret group Cerberus, knows the Reapers' true purpose and initiates a plan to study modified Reaper technology by using former Cerberus operative Paul Grayson as a subject. Grayson had previously rescued his daughter with the help of Kahlee Sanders, an Ascension project director. When Grayson disappears, Kahlee turns to Captain David Anderson, an Alliance hero, to find him. They search for a hidden Cerberus facility, but others are also looking for Grayson. As the experiments continue, Reaper technology begins to affect Grayson's mind, causing his identity to blur and threatening to unleash the Reapers on the galaxy.
