Douglas Coupland's 2010 Massey Lecture is a five-hour story set in an airport cocktail lounge during a global disaster. Five characters are trapped inside: Karen, a single mother waiting for her online date; Rick, the bartender; Luke, a pastor on the run; Rachel, a distant woman; and a mysterious voice called Player One. As the world ends, each character reveals personal truths. The story, influenced by authors like Kurt Vonnegut and J. G. Ballard, examines themes such as time, identity, society, and the afterlife. It raises more questions than it answers, leaving readers with the sense that humanity has entered a new phase with no possibility of returning to the past.
